Hundreds of resident doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, yesterday protested non-payment of their four months’ salaries by the Federal Government, threatening to withdraw medical services to patients on November 15 if not paid.

The protesting doctors led by their Chairman, Dr. Nonso Okoye, said though the aggrieved doctors, under the auspices of the Association of Resident Doctors, had met with the management of the Federal Medical Centre over the issue; the management was, however, not favourably disposed towards their plight.

Armed with placards with varying inscriptions such as “Our Families are hungry,” “FG implement the “No Pay, No Work,” “Pay our salaries” and “We are hungry, MMM is becoming an option,” the resident doctors called on Nigerians to prevail on the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to pay up salaries owed to them.

According to Okoye, the resident doctors at the Federal Medical Centre were paid only 52 per cent of their salaries since February 2016 and had not been paid since September,” we want the Federal Government to pay us our money.

We have not withdrawn our services. All we are saying is for the Federal Government to pay us for work done.” “Nigerians should prevail on the Federal Government to pay us. As much as we don’t want to withdraw our services, we have resolved to withdraw the services by November 15 if nothing is done. We have met with the management, but all they did was pay us a month’s salary.”
