In past cranberries have played an important role in preventing frequent Urinary Tract infections by blocking bacteria sticking to the cell walls. This new research has given more hope as it says that eating cranberries may prevent bacterial infections and can even minimise our dependence on antibiotics.
Scientists from McGill University and INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier in Canada researched that cranberry extract effectively stopped the communication between bacteria related to persistent infections.
Some previous researches have also shown that American cranberry contains compounds such as proanthocyanidins (PACs) that are rich in antioxidants, anti-adhesion and anti-microbial properties that help to send away illness.
The team of researchers experimented on fruit flies a commonly used model for studying human infections and they discovered that cranberry provided flies protection from bacterial infection and they lived longer than their cranberry free counterparts. The experiment so far has been quite successful and has given hope that it can be used to manage infections and minimise our dependence on antibiotics.
