Nigeria’s failed healthcare system is in the center of debate as an American twitter user, Sean Murphy gave a dog in Maimi, United States a better chance of getting medical attention than an average Nigerian in a Lagos hospital.
Nigeria’s decayed healthcare system has been in the eyes of the world following the frequent visit of Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari to London for medical vacation; a total of 156 days has been spent in London this year which has raised serious concerns on the state of healthcare system in Nigeria.
When @africafeed tweeted “So a dog with lymphoma in Miami has a better chance of getting treatment than a woman with a brain tumor in Lagos, Shame!”, the reaction from Nigerians was that of hopelessness, despair and dejection.
Although comparing Miami to Lagos was farfetched, but the state of healthcare system in Nigeria gives no chance for comparison with any advanced country in the world.
Despite the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, there was no mention of it in the independent day broadcast by Presiden Buhari among the list of all the challenges facing Nigeria which gives room to wonder if the government has given up on the healthcare system.
The present reality is that the elites gets medical attention overseas while the common masses are left at the mercy of pitiable health services offered in Nigerian hospitals. It’s time for the government to declare state of emergency in the health sector for a total overhaul of the system.
