“We deserve some #Accolades, not insults” – youth tells Buhari – For weeks now #Accolades has been trending on social media which have left a lot of social media users confused as to what it really means, out of curiosity I decided to dig deep to properly understand the trend.
It turns out #Accolades is a cryptic message hidden deeply in funny videos on social media made by Nigerian celebrities with random acts of comedy with “we deserve some accolades” repeatedly pronounced.
While most of the cryptic funny videos did not expressly mention “Lazy Nigerian Youth” or president Buhari, it soon became viral in a classic work of art meant to send a subtle message across the country and around the world that Nigerian youths are not lazy but deserves some accolades.
In one of the videos made by Nigerian musician KC, it became clear that #Accolades is a viral trend made to subtly protest the “Lazy Nigerian Youth” tag by President Buhari, the musician insisted that youths in the music industry have gone global selling out stadiums and the big stages which should be celebrated with some #Accolades rather than insults.
The “lazy Nigerian youths” became a trending phrase following an infamous statement by Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari allegedly saying Nigerian youth don’t like to work but depends on oil money.
There has been widespread criticism against the president over the comments, youths in the country have responded using every conceivable method to pass the message across including verbal onslaughts, showcasing crafts proving a lot of youths are hardworking, and the latest is a subtle protest hidden beneath the #Accolades trend.
I personally find these videos not just entertaining but a brilliant work of art, it re-enforced the fact that Nigerian youths are not lazy but very creative and hardworking.
