The Nigerian Diaspora Commission has said that after thorough investigation by the Commission, these are the facts of the matter;

The woman identified as Ms. Joy Emovon lived in Italy for years where she had a child. She was subsequently deported from Italy, later relocated to Switzerland where she had another child, from Switzerland she moved back to Italy, then subsequently to Germany where she had another child and lived for a few years.

Neither she nor her kids are German citizens, as German law does not automatically confer citizenship on foreigners born in Germany.

Ms. Emovon applied for asylum status in Germany and was denied, with the denial of her asylum, continuous stay in Germany became virtually impossible.She then took advantage of the IOM voluntary assistance program which encourages irregular migrants to return to their countries , with a financial support of between €1000 – €2000.

Based on that decision, she was given an Emergency travel certificate from the Nigerian embassy and subsequently put on a flight back home.

The claims that her hands and legs were handcuffed are not true.

The Nigerian Diaspora Commission while sympathizing with Ms Emovon’s plight particularly her three children, stated that “it is important to put out the facts so as not to mislead the public.” Chairman of the Commission, Abike Dabiri Erewa said, “We continue to appeal to Nigerians to obey the laws of other lands, while Government continues to provide an enabling environment for its citizens.”
