AFCON 2019: Mixed reactions trail exclusion of Iheanacho, Semi Ajayi – Mixed reactions have trailed the decision of Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to exclude Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho and Rotherham United’s Semi Ajayi from the final list of players to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
While some fans believed the decision to drop both players was a good one, many felt Iheanacho should have been given another chance to prove himself despite his poor form for Leicester City last season.
Ace sports broadcaster Godwin Enakhena tweeted, “Who will now lead praise and worship in the Super Eagles now that Iheanacho is not going to the Nations Cup?”
According to Favour Afolayan, who claimed not to know much about Ajayi, the Eagles coach decided to go to the AFCON with his best hands.
“Well, for Iheanacho, you always want to go to war with your best men, Leicester had him for over 38 weeks and couldn’t trust him, that’s more than enough proof,” Afolayan, a web designer, told The PUNCH.
“Iheanacho does not deserve the invitation in the first place, he was far below average in the just-concluded EPL season with Leicester city,” Edache Abutu added.
His view was also corroborated by Ayobami Oluyemi, who said, “It’s good that Iheanacho was dropped from the team. In recent times, he’s been unable to prove himself worthy of being a member of the Eagles.”
