Dangote Refinery Set to Kick Off Petrol Refining by November 30

Dangote Refinery Set to Kick Off Petrol Refining by November 30 – Anticipation is mounting as the Dangote Refinery, a trailblazing project for Nigeria, prepares to commence diesel and jet fuel refining operations in October 2023, with petrol refining hot on its heels in November 2023.

A Glimpse into the Future

Dangote Group Executive Director, Devakumar Edwin, recently unveiled the refinery’s operational roadmap in an interview with S&P Global Commodity Insights. The headlines?

  • The refinery is primed to receive its inaugural cargo of crude within the forthcoming fortnight.
  • Production will kick off with an impressive 370,000 barrels per day (b/d) of diesel and jet fuel from October 2023.
  • By the end of November, the refinery aims to incrementally increase production to a staggering 650,000 b/d of petrol.

Edwin, exuding confidence, remarked, “We are geared up to receive the crude. The moment the first vessel arrives, it’s go-time!”

Navigating Challenges

Every revolution has its challenges, and Dangote Refinery is no exception. Edwin candidly shared some speed bumps, notably from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC). The NNPC had previously committed their crude elsewhere, causing a slight delay in supplying to the Dangote Refinery. However, Edwin assures this is a temporary setback, with plans to transition exclusively to Nigerian crude by November 2023.

A significant revelation from the discussion was the mode of transaction for the Nigerian oil. Contrary to some circulating reports, Edwin clarified that the purchase would be in US dollars due to the refinery’s location in a free zone near Lagos. This strategic location does come with perks, as NNPC will offer some crude at discounted rates, given their equity stake in the project.

Diverse Crude Processing Capabilities

The Dangote Refinery isn’t just pigeonholed to Nigerian crude. Edwin highlighted its capability to refine a broad spectrum of African crudes (excluding the dense Angolan grades), Middle Eastern Arab Light, US light tight oil, and even some Russian grades, contingent on global trade dynamics.

Edwin emphasized the refinery’s potential impact, stating, “A mere 50% of our production can satisfy Nigeria’s entire requirement.”

A Global Vision

Beyond serving Nigeria, Dangote has a global blueprint. The excess gasoline, compliant with the stringent Euro 5 quality standards, is poised for export to other African countries, the US, and South America. Europe can anticipate jet fuel exports, while sub-Saharan Africa is earmarked for diesel sales.

Bridging Past and Future

The Dangote Refinery journey, which began as a vision in 2013, has been anything but straightforward. From political interference to natural challenges like swamp clearances, the project saw myriad delays. But every cloud has a silver lining. These setbacks provided invaluable time to refine the refinery’s design and enhance its capacity. What began as a 300,000 b/d vision has now evolved into what will soon become the world’s largest single-train refinery.

The Larger Impact

Edwin, who has been with the Dangote Group since 1992, envisions a transformative impact on Nigeria. The refinery promises a consistent supply of eco-friendly refined products, bolstering foreign exchange reserves. Furthermore, it stands as a beacon of hope in import-dependent West Africa, particularly Nigeria, which recently grappled with fuel supply challenges due to the discontinuation of fuel subsidies.

In Edwin’s words, “The revenue generated will be reinvested, amplifying growth.” A sentiment echoed by the vision of Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest individual, whose dedication to Nigeria remains unwavering.

In conclusion, as the Dangote Refinery gears up for operations, it’s not just about refining crude. It’s about refining Nigeria’s future, setting the stage for a brighter, self-sufficient tomorrow.
