How Buhari’s Defenders Can React to Nigeria’s New Poverty Record – When Transparency International issued a report that was not favorable to Nigeria, the Buhari administration and its social media herdsmen and herdswomen declared war on TI.
When Amnesty International (Nigeria) issued a report alleging rape and other transgressions by the Nigerian Army, rather than look into the issue, the Buhari administration and its social media herdsmen and herdswomen declared war on Amnesty Nigeria. To date, they still hound Amnesty’s offices in Abuja with rented crowds and all that jazz.
Now that the World Poverty Clock has declared that Nigeria has overtaken India as the poverty capital of the world, I have an advice for the Buhari administration and its social media herdsmen and herdswomen.
For now, they are still preoccupied with how to find a messaging about Plateau that will fix Buhari as an innocent victim of ill-intentioned reporting. Therefore, they are yet to notice that the World Poverty Clock’s new index is starting to be reported internationally as a terrible report card for Buhari the god.
When they eventually notice, they will declare war on that clock like they declared war on TI and Amnesty.
This little note is just to remind them that although the World Poverty Clock is often associated with the UN because it allows to measure how the UN SDGs are being met or not met, the clock is not owned by the UN.
Do not declare your war on the UN. The clock was created by an NGO called World Data Lab. They are in Austria. The clock is now funded mainly by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.
So, if instead of addressing the real issue of what the clock has revealed, the administration and its minions decide to do what they do best – deny, delegitimize, pass the buck – remember to declare your war on Angela Merkel. Not the UN.
I just wanted to render you that little service.
